North Country Cheviot Sheep Society
The Annual Show & Sale of North Country Cheviot Park type rams & females took place on Wednesday 13th September 2023 at Lockerbie Auction Mart, with as big an entry of females & rams seen in recent years, the ring was busy all day.
Judging the show of rams, Mr Peter Hedley, Overacres was presented with over 50 rams - ably finding his champion in the Humbleheugh pen from WD Allen, Lot 172 Humbleheugh D 26083 sired by Nisbet Mill Banger & out of a hombred ewe by Soutra Weapon he later sold for £2800 to Messrs Dowson & Sortin, Battle Hill, County Durham.
Reserve Champion was Lot 57 Nettlingflatt Diamond from Andrew Pate, a Philiphaugh Battleship son out of a homebred ewe who joined the Crookedstane flock of David Aitken for £1600.
Top price came from the Gilston pen of R & T Dun, Lot 105 Gilston Definitely Yes sired by Belmaduthy Blaze sold in a half way split to W & J Thomson, Hownam Grange & Kelsocleugh Farming, Kelso for £12000. Late in the sale this was closely followed by Lot 291 Allanshaws Destiny, a Currthers Admiral son from J Runciman & Son, he joins the Philiphaugh Flock for £11000.
Next best was Lot 285, second in the ring from the Allanshaws pen, Allanshaws Dream a Wandylaw Belter son who heads to Northern Ireland with O & T MacAllister, Oakwood & another heading over the water to Northern Ireland was the pen leader for JS Baillie, Lot 159 Sebay Dancer sired by Overacres Alert joins the Benrafton flock of Norman Robinson.
Two rams made £5000, the first, Lot 107 Gilston Duke, this time a Synton B 10355 son sold to CR Graham, Carruthers & the second, another from the Allanshaws pen Lot 290 Allanshaws Double 007 sired by Sebay Xcitable heads across to Northern Ireland in a half share between A Armstrong, Stragole & A & S Irvine, Fingerpost.
Jenifer Cowans Hightae flock received a top price of £4500 for Lot 43, Hightae D 00132 sired by Humbleheugh Allen, he stays in the borders with S Davies, Synton. A further nine rams achieved over £3000, the first two in from CR Graham, Lots 45 Carruthers D 10504 & Lot 46 Carruthers D 10761 both sired by Gilston Bonny Lad II reached £3500 selling to the Hightae & Jethart flocks respectively. JS Baillie, Sebay had the next three at the same money, Lot 156 Sebay Daredevil, Lot 164 Sebay Distinction & Lot 167 Sebay Dynamo all Overacres Alert sons sold to the Greendale, Broomhillbank & Rubershaw flocks.
Overall the best rams met great demand throughout the sale & over hundred rams were easy commercial money, with something for everyone's needs.

A large increase in the number of females forward to this sale for some years met a with a good overall trade. Two gimmers from the well sort after Synton flock of S Davies reached £700 to top the days female trade, these head to Northern Ireland for the Castleview flock. Next best in the gimmers came from A Polson, Smerlie with a pen of five achieving £460 to A & J Morris, Logie, Fife, followed by two pens of four at £450 & £440 resepctively from A Matthewson, Soutra selling to S Heads, Greendale, Ayrshire & J Page, Eden Hall, Penrith.
A pen of five ewes from the Philiphaugh flock sold for £480 to Jack Webster, Rivendale, Derbyshire with another five from the same home at £280 heading to Wales for W Hughes, Refail.
Top price in the Ewe Lambs came from JS Baillie's Sebay flock at £440 for a single lamb selling to F Kay, Coomlees, Peebles with next best being a pen of two lambs again from Philiphaugh Estate, this time selling to D Robinson, Glen, Northern Ireland.
Again, overall trade allowed for everyone to find something in the right price range, with the majority at good commercial money.
