North Country Cheviot Sheep Society
The second annual show & sale of North Country Cheviot In-Lamb Ewes & Ewe Hoggs took place at Monmouthshire Liovestock Centre on saturday 28th January 2023.
Following the success of their first sale in 2022, an entry of 85 females was forward for this sale, Derbyshire based breeder, Mr James Metcalfe, Greenhill ably judged those out for the show & found his Champion on the day from the Knowle Harbour flock of Michael Thomas & Darren Bevan, an Upper Cornquoy Borderline sired ewe hogg out of a Pengroes ewe by Hownam Grange Royal Blend who had been part of the 3rd prize pair in the Royal Welsh Winter Fair in 2022, she later sold to the Jugde for £756.
Sam Pedrick's Brimley flock picked up the Reserve place with a Shearling Ewe sired by Broomhillbank Viper, scanned with twins to Humbleheugh Billionaire she went on to sell early in the sale for £840, with the same home acheiving £525 & £472.50 twice.
Champion in the Hill section came from Phil & Amy Jones's recently established Clytha hill flock, a Shearling ewe sired by Brackside Northern Light & in lamb to the £2000 Lairg purchase Whitehope A 26838 she sold for the days top price in the Hill type section of £420. Reserve was an Aged ewe from Pat Hulburd's Islay flock based in Herefordshire.
The top price on the day came for Ben Baker's BB flock, 1st prize Ewe, a 1 crop sired by Overacres Xtravagant scanned with twins to the £5000 Quoybrae 2021 purchase Sebay Buccaneer, she acheived £1155, the same good home had one at £546 & his 2nd prize ewe at £441.
The next best after the reserve champion in the in-lamb sheep came from Phil & Amy Jones's Clytha park flock, a shearling ewe sired by Overacres Williams One, scanned with twins to Allanshaws Crusader she reached £682.50. The Y Beudy flock of Amanda Sloyan sold their 5 year old ewe sired by Biggins Sam for £504 & Aled Jones penbache flock from North Wales topped at £441 for a 4 year old ewe sired by Allansahws Vivaldi.
Ewe Hoggs experianced a more selective trade, with buyers looking for something a little bit special, the champion received the top price followed by three from the BB Flock pen at £546, £472.50 & £367.50.
Slightly more Hill females entered this year received a plenty of interest as this section of the breeds continues to steadlily grow in popularity through the area with the Champion taking the top price on the day.
