Monmouthshire Show & Sale 2023

The Annual North Country Cheviot Sheep Society Show & Sale of Females & Rams took place on Friday 25th August 2023 at Monmouthshire Livestock Market, judging was in the capable hands of Mr Andrew Pate, Nettlingflat (Park) & Mr Brian Bowen (Hill). 

A great entry of sheep for the show eventually seen the Park Champion awarded to a Homebred 4 year old Ewe from JH Williams, Pengroes who later sold to £630 to R Marks Richline flock in Sussex.

Taking the top place in the Hill section was a Shearling Ewe sired by Attonburn Brute from Pat Hulburd's Islay flock who later sold for £315.

All 14 rams forward sold, with the 1st prize Park ram from Ben Baker's BB flock, BB Dosomedamage sired by Sebay Blacksmith making the top price of £1050.

Sale Report

264 Females and 14 Rams forward for the 2023 Sale, a very similar entry on the year. A packed ringside including several new buyers ensured a terrific trade from start to finish with 97% clearance.

Flock Ewes
The sale got off to a flying start with the flock aged ewes. Frenzied bidding and strong competiton throughout this section saw the Overall Champion, Lot 414 a 4yr old ewe from JH Williams, Pengroes sell to £630, with Mrs A Sandle, Spring Bank selling to £525, B Baker, BB at £472.5 and £420, A.D. Jones, Penbache also at £420 with any number of ewes trading between £260 and £360 well above commercial money.
Aged Hill ewes £294 from M N Williams, Pengroes for the 1st prize Aged hill ewe and Reserve Hill Champion, with Mr G Price, Cymraeg selling to £273.

Gimmers
Through and through the strongest trade we have seen at this sale. Top of the day, and new centre record of £1260 went to Lot 471 from AT & PR Jones, Clytha who was snapped up by new breeder Mr Sam Snare, Llangadfan. Another tremendous run of shearling ewes from Mr S. Pedrick, Brimley saw the 1st Prize shearling and Reserve Champion (Lot 487) sell at £787.50 with sheep from the same home to £472.50 & £441.
Mrs A Sandle sold her strong pen of shearlings to £546 & £504. The best of a good run from Messrs N & CM Barratt, WJ achieved £420.
Terrific demand throughout with several buyers for those “top end” sheep but very strong competiton in the £260 - £360 bracket and any number of people to bid for these, putting them well above commercial money.
Hill type shearlings equally as good to sell. Ms P Hulburd sold the 1st prize shearling ewe and Overall Champion together with the 3rd prize yearling for £315. A very smart pair of shearlings from Mr G Price, Cymraeg realised £304.50, with Mr G Hughes, Glan Ithon to £283.50.

Ewe Lambs
A great show of ewe lambs to a top of £483 for the 1st Prize winner from Mr B Baker, BB. Miss J Robey & Mr E Pritchard, Olchon sold their strong run to £441, with Mr S Pedrick selling to £315 and Messrs K & PM Griffiths, Millards at £357. Most others trading from £190 – £2, with a handful £160 – £180.
Hill type lambs topped at £141.75 for smart pen from Mr R. Jones, Cwmdu. Mr G Price and Ms P Hulburd sold lambs to £131.25, with several other pens £95 – £120.

Rams
Strong competition throughout on the rams. 1st prize ram from Mr Baker, BB sold well at £1050, 2nd Prize from Mr J H Williams, Pengroes hit £861. A 4 year old tup from Messrs Barratt, WJ achieved £630. Several other shearlings from £420 – £570, with a few around the £315 mark. The 2 ram lambs forward sold very well, Miss K Davies & Mr D Owen sold their Royal Welsh winning lamb to £892.50, Messrs K & PM Griffiths, Millards sold a strong lamb to £651.
