North Country Cheviot Sheep Society
The Annual Show and Sale of Park type North Country Cheviot Tups and Females was held on Friday 20th September 2024 at Quoybrae Auction, Caithness.
This year's judges were Mr Roderick Runciman, Allanshaws & Mr Andrew Morris, Logie who had the uneviable task of judging the single shearling tup classes, a large entry brought out to them saw them find their Champion from the Orkney breeders pen of Alan Smith, Upper Cornquoy - a Knockcocher Catapult son by a homebred ewe sired by Durran Ace, Upper Cornquoy Exclusive later sold to Scarborough breeder, James Bruce, Boxhill for £8000 whihc was also the days top price. With another at £3800, Lot 6 Upper Cornquoy Enhance sired by Durran Casino out of a ewe by Wester Tamnavulin selling to Messrs Mackay. Balkeith and two more over £1000, Upper Cornquoy averaged £2087 for 8 sold.
Reseve Champion, Lot 33 Bardnaclavan Eurostar from DN Campbell & Son, sired by Soutra Cannonball joins local breeders J Forbes, Upper Boultach at £1500.
Two further tups achieved over two thousand pounds, firstly Lot 57 Smerlie Enchanter sired by Garson Bruno from Andrew Polson, he stays local with the Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust, Longoe and secondly Lot 107 Sebay Elvis a Bardnaclavan Challenger son from JS Baillie, he joins the Maerdy flock of Rhys Davies, Wales.
With all four top price tups selling to breeders, a further 15 of the 76 sold achieved between £1000 - £2000, overall a 73% clearance.
The females and groups were ably judged by Mr James Bruce, Boxhill & Mr Stewie Sleigh, Fyvie, Female Champion came from JS Baillie, Sebay - Lot 130 a homebred gimmer who sold for the top price of £1300 to James Bruce, Boxhill. James Mackay's Biggins flock also received £1000 for Lot 122 a gimmer by Longoe Commander.
