Lockerbie In-Lamb & Ewe Hogg Sale 2024

The Annual Sale of North Country Cheviot In-Lamb Females and Ewe hoggs was held on Saturday 10th February 2024 at Lockerbie Auction Mart, always a well attended sale with the high quality stock available, many a new flock has been established from this sale over the years and this year was no disappointment.

Park Type

Judge for the pre-sale show was Mr Aled Jones, Penbache who'd travelled from North Wales but is a familar face at Lockerbie, with a strong show forward in all classes the job was not an easy one but he found his Champion Park type in the pen of George Milne, Kinaldy, who takes the top honours for the second year running. Lot 51 a homebred gimmer sired by Allanshaws Ammarilo and scanned in lamb to Kingside Chianti, travelled home with the judge who backed his decision at £2000, top price of the day. The Kinaldy pen sold a further three Allanshaws Ammarilo daughters for £1300, £1000 & £700 respectively with a pen average of £1120 for 5 sold.

Reserve Champion in the Park section was awarded to the 2nd place gimmer from Carrurthers, Lot 73 a homebred gimmer sired by Humbleheugh Bangon and scanned with twins to Gilston Duke (purchased for £5000 in 2023 from Lockerbie), she also joins the Penbache flock for £1100. Two further highlights from the Carruthers pen, Lot 69, who took 1st place in the ewe class, an Allanshaws Aristrocrat sired 2 crop ewe heads North to Aberdeen joining the Fyvie flock of Stewart Sleigh for £1200 and Lot 72, 2nd place ewe taking the journey into South Wales with Ben Baker for £1000. Carruthers averaged £740 for 7 sold.

Not ot be left out, highlights from the Ewe Hoggs came from Jennifer Cowan's Hightae pen whihc is always well sought after, Lot 44 a Wandylaw X-factor sired hogg which stood 2nd in the pre-sale show sold for £1100 to W Heads, Greendale, with Lot 45, the same way breed not far behind at £900 to Sam Rodgers, Grannite Steppes, Cornwall. Hightae sold 4 to average £775.
First time consignors to the February sale, WD Allen, Humbleheugh sold their 1st place Ewe Hogg Lot 41, sired by Gospelghall Wiggy for £550 to A Evans, Carmarthen.

Hill Type

The biggest entry of Hill type females at this sale and they were met by great demand with the Champion breaking all Hill female records, Lot 77 a homebred gimmer from Bob and Becca Rennie's Attonburn flock, sired by Badanloch Xtra Special and in lamb to Sorbietrees Captain (joint top price at Lockerbie in 2023 £16000) sold for £1800 to Tomos Ellis, Hiraethog flock in North Wales. Two gimmers sired by Badanloch Wildfire and in lamb to Badanloch Xtra Special (purchased in Lairg 2021 fro £16000) sold for £1700 & £1600 both head North to Sutherland and Ross-shire Lot 78 to Murdo MacDonald, with Lot 82 to Mr Mackenzie, Balintore Farms. Attonburn sold 6 to average £1150.

Reserve Champion was from regular consignor to this sale, Jim Thomson, Kelso Lot 87 a ewe sired by Esk Warrior, in lamb to Kelso C 15974 sold to Holly Brown, Hazeldene.
