North Country Cheviot Sheep Society
The Annual Show and Sale of Park type North Country Cheviots took place at Lockerbie Market on Wednesday 18th September 2024, the pre-sale show attracted many prospective buyers when judged by well known breeder, Mr Ritchie Strawhorn, Broomhillbank.
Finding his Champion in the Allanshaws pen of J Runciman & Son, Lot 1 Allanshaws Eye Candy, a son of Glebe Farm Class Act, came first into the sale ring and sold for the days top rpice of £15000 to A Ewing. This was quickly followed by a flurry of bidding on the Allanshaws tups with one at £4500 Allanshaws Eldorado sired by Allanshaws Cannonball son, two at £4000 firstly Allanshaws Extra Special sired by Pengroes Assassin and then Allanshaws Ezra again by Allanshaws Cannonball and one at £3500, Allanshaws Eagle Eye another by Glebe Farm Class Act, leaving the days top average with this good home too - 11 tups sold averaging £3900.
Reserve Champion came from first time consignor to the Lockerbie sale, Jack Webster, Derbyshire, Lot 146 Rivendale Eagle Eye sired by Overcares Alert and out of a homebred ewe by Kinaldy Aristrocrat joins the Hill Top flock of TW Bell, Keswick for £4500. The same good home also received £2800 for his second in, Rivendale Eyeeye Captain another Alert son out of a homebred ewe by Philiphaugh Warlord heads to Wales with D Roberts, Ty Corniog.
The second top prices came late in the sale, Lot 249 Synton E 12878 a Gospelhall Bob son, who was purchased from Lockerbie in 2021 for £3500, from G Davies was purchased by JS Baillie, Sebay, Orkney, quickly followed at £6500 by Lot 266 Philiphaugh Eben Etzebeth sired by Carruthers City Lights, purchased from Lockerbie in 2022 for the same money, from Philiphaugh Estates joins the Gilston flock of Messrs Dun.
W & J Thomson received £6000 for Lot 75 Hownam Grange Exquisite sired by Pengroes Bond from A Pate, Nettlingflat, with two more bred the same way selling for £4000 & £2000 respectively - Hownam Grange Ego purchased in a two way split between P Hedley, Overacres & S Turnbull, Jethart and Hownam Grange Eyecatcher joining Luke Bell-Percy's Jervaulx flock in Yorkshire, this left the Hownam Grange pen with the second top average of the day at £2285 for 7 sold.
Overall, breeders tups sold for the best money but with plenty of commercial tups at handy money and many not finding home, 215 tups sold from those forward giving a 76% clearance. 46 tups sold for £2000 or above with a further 44 tups selling between £1000 - £2000.
A strong entry of quality females topped at £700 for a pair of shearlings from WD Allen, Humbleheugh puchased by Jack Webster, Rivendale Derbyshire, this was followed in the same pen for a single at £550 selling to Daniel Lynn, Northway and one from Robbie McCormack's Crofthead flockt the same money to Fraser Kay, Coomlees.
Ewe lambs topped at £600 from D Aitken, Crookedstane to Alan Grant, Achalone and a single from Scott Davies, Synton flock making £520 to Cammy Jackson, Future.
Draft Ewes met a top of £10 or a pen of 15 from William Heads, Greendale closely followed by £300 for a pen of 10 from Norman MacDonald, Gothigill.
