The Annual Sale of North Country Cheviot In Lamb Ewes and Ewe Hoggs took place at Monmouthshire Livestock Centre on Saturday 27th January 2024, the pre-sale show was ably judged in the Park Section by well known breeder, Mr David Pittendreigh of the Coed Y Foel flock & in the Hill section, Mr R Wilson.
Taking the top honours in the show & going on to top the trade of the day at £840 was Lot 21, a Shearling Ewe from Ben Baker's BB flock - Homebred sired by Croftheads Boxer, sold in lamb with twins to the £5000 purchase from Caithness, Sebay Buccaneer, she was purchased by a Welsh buyer. The same good home also received £787 for Lot 22, a Brefi Ewe sired by Bardnaclavan All Gold, again in lamb to Sebay Buccaneer she heads North to join the Craigbank flock of Luke Holmes & £735 for Lot 24, a 1 crop Nun Cote Nook ewe by South Lund Vanished, this time in lamb to the newly purchased Soutra Duke sire from Lockerbie in 2023, shes heads to Worcester.
A further two lots received £735, firstlty Lot 54 who had stood thrid in the show, A homebred Shearling ewe sired by Brefi Vince from Amanda Sloyan's Y Beudy flock, scanned in lamb with twins to Jethart Ace she joins the newly established Dorset based flock of James Batho & Phoebe Auburn. Next at the same money and standing second place in the show Lot 55, again a homebred Shearling Ewe this time from the Muirhead flock of Jock & Katherine Muirhead who'd travelled from Taunton for the sale, sired by Kinaldy X Factor and in lamb with twins to Humbleheugh Dictator who was a £2000 purchase from Lockerbie in 2023 she stays local joining the Elms flock of Thomas & Erin Parry.
Aled Jones's Penbache pen topped at £682 for Lot 42, a 3 crop homebred ewe sired by Humbleheugh Xcalibur, scanned with triplets by Synton Cantona she joins another newly established flock in Wales of Bron Tango, Bryn-Yr-Orsedd. Regular consignor to the sale at Monmouthshire, Sam Pedrick received £577.50 for his Brimley homebred shearling ewe, Lot 33 sired by Carruthers Almighty, scanned in lamb with twins to Humbleheugh Billionaire.
Park ewe hoggs topped at £504 from Gywnne & Linda Davies, Brefi flock - she was purchased by Kate Perkins for her Duffryn Flock. The first prize Hogg Lot 86, from Mr Tudor's Keiran flock was purchased from £430.
Hill type sheep were strongly sort after & with less available, sold well. Top price was first in the ring from Ben Baker, a 1 crop Keppoch ewe scanned in lamb to Clytha Dougies Boy she sold fro £399. Next best Lot 2, a Shearling ewe from Pat Hulburd's Islay flock, sired by Attonburn Beast and in lamb to Mowhaugh Cedrick, she received £336. Gareth Price sold his pen best, an aged ewe Lot 6 for £315 & new consignor to the sale, T Ellis, Hiraethoh flock sold his best, a 4 year old ewe for £294.
Hill hoggs topped at £262 each for a pair from the Islay, Lot 14 with another pair Lot 13, who'd stood 2nd & 3rd in the show selling for £231 each. Lot 12 from G Price, Cymraeg & Lot 11 from T Ellis Hiraethog were also at the same money.
