Lockerbie Park Sale – Show & Sale of Park-Type North Country Cheviots

The annual Lockerbie Show and Sale of Park-type North Country Cheviots was judged by renowned Yorkshire breeder Keith Stones, assisted by his daughter Mary, of the Nun Cote Nook Flock.

Champion:

Top honours went to the Hownam Grange pen of Willie & Jim Thomson. Their winner, Hownam Grange Forefront, a son of Gilston Definitely Yes, later sold for £5,000 to Philiphaugh Estate, Selkirk

The Thomsons also led the trade with their first entry, Hownam Grange Force—bred the same way as the Champion—selling to Cheviot Farming Ltd, Northumberland for £6,000.
In total, the flock sold eight tups to average £3,100.

Reserve Champion:

Reserve honours were awarded to Gemma McCornick’s Knockcocher Ferrari, sired by Broomhillbank Criffel, which realised £1,600 when purchased by McGee Farms.

Leading Prices

Leading the day’s trade, havng won the Best Group of Three judged by Graham Dun, Gilson, was Scott Davies’ Synton pen at £8,000 with Synton First Class, a son of Philiphaugh Broadsword, purchased for the Rivendale flock of Jack Webster, Derbyshire.
The same pen followed at £4,000 for Synton F 13938, by Culsh Doric Dynamo, heading to the Nettlingflat flock of Andrew Pate.
Synton sold nine tups to average £2,155.

The Runciman family’s Allanshaws flock also struck £8,000 twice:

  • Allanshaws Five Star, by Gilston Don Carlo, sold in a half share to Messrs Mair (Muriesk) and Stewie Sleigh (Fyvie).

  • Allanshaws Flyer, a Wandylaw Belter son, joined the Greendale flock of Stuart and William Heads, Ayrshire.

Two more Wandylaw Belter progeny—Allanshaws Full Monty and Allanshaws Fever Tree—realised £5,000 and £4,000 respectively, selling to the Broomhillbank flock of Ritchie Strawhorn and to Phil and Amy Jones’ Clytha flock in Wales.
Overall, Allanshaws moved 12 tups for an impressive £3,600 average.

Strong Early Trade

Early in the sale, Philiphaugh Estate set the pace, realising £7,000 for their first in the ring, Philiphaugh Fireball, a son of Allanshaws Destiny, sold to Orkney breeders J. S. Baillie, Sebay.
A second, Philiphaugh Fire Starter—bred the same way—also made £7,000, heading to Eric Graham’s Gremista flock in Shetland.

Nettlingflat followed with a strong showing, achieving £6,000 for Nettlingflat Freedom, sired by Pen-Y-Bont Exceptional, sold in a two-way split to Graham Dun, Gilston and Angus Weir, Bluecairn.
Another, Nettlingflat Flyer, by Philiphaugh Creative, realised £5,000 when purchased by Graham Dun, Gilston.
The Pate family finished with the day’s second-best average of £3,150 for four sold.

Female Section – Strong Demand Despite Smaller Entry

Females met with huge demand despite a lighter offering.
Topping the trade was a stunning single gimmer from regular consignors G. R. G. McCallum, Belmauthy, which sold for £1,150 to David Beech, Ormerley.
The sisters, Joanna & Alisa, added a second gimmer at £720, purchased by Joe Mitchell, Coldwell, West Yorkshire.
In total, the Belmauthy flock sold 13 gimmers to average £560.

A tremendous run of gimmers from Tom and David Matthewson, Soutra peaked at £950 for a pair, both joining newly established flocks, the first heads into Northumberland with Thomas Hammond, Branton Estate while the second travelled to Cumbria for the Arkle flock of Thomas Smith and George Wilkinson. The Soutra flock sold 14 to average a phenomenal £675. 
The Arkle flock also secured the top-priced ewe lamb from Gemma McCornick, Knockcocher at £900.

Overall clearance stood at 75 %, and 56 % of the tups sold for under £1,000, ensuring plenty of opportunity for every budget.
