NSA Builth Sale Report 2025

NSA Sale of North Country Cheviot Rams 2025

A larger entry of 104 Park tups and 10 Hill tups came forward for this year’s NSA Sale, with trade proving exceptionally strong for the better-end sheep.

Of the 86 Park tups sold, 22 exceeded 1000gns, producing a very healthy average of 730gns. Although clearance was a more modest 79%, this largely reflected the more limited demand for sheep in the lower price brackets (300–500gns), with noticeably fewer buyers on hand to clear these later lots. By contrast, there was a strong ringside for the top-quality tups, with buyers prepared to pay good money for the sheep they had targeted.

The Park show was judged by Mr Karl Griffiths, Millards, who tapped out his Champion from the pen of Katy Davies and Dafydd Owen (Penybont Flock). This outstanding tup went on to make the top price of the day at 2200gns, selling to new breeders Rhys Groucott and Emily Williams, Crumlin.

Messrs Davies & Owen also realised 2000gns and 1800gns for a further two tups in their run. Ben Baker (BB Flock) matched the 2000gns mark, while Carys Davies (Crughaf Flock) sold to 1700gns late in the day. Good sheep were readily sold at strong money throughout the sale. Special mention goes to Aled Jones (Penbache Flock) whose superb, even pen of tups all made between 1200gns and 1600gns, bar one.

Hill Section

The Hill tup section saw 10 entries forward and a steady trade throughout. Mr Gareth Hughes, Glan Ithon, officiated as judge, awarding the Champion to Tomos Ellis (Hiraethog Flock). This tup went on to sell at 550gns to Mr Breese, Llanidloes. Mrs R. Jordan, Moortown, sold to 500gns, with Mr Ellis again at 450gns.

Females

A blistering trade was seen on the handful of females forward:

  • A. Sandle, Spring Bank – Shearling ewes to 720gns, 700gns, and 650gns

  • M. Holmes, Winterdyne – to 710gns, 690gns, and 670gns

  • H. Cockburn & Partners, Kingside – Two- and three-crop ewes to 640gns and 420gns

  • Gwynne Davies, Brefi – Shearlings to 600gns and 560gns

The strong female trade rounded off an excellent day’s selling, particularly for the top end of Park tups, where quality was well rewarded.
