North Country Cheviots Take Top Honours at Anglesey County Show

This year’s Anglesey County Show, held at Mona, staged an excellent display of North Country Cheviots in both the Park and Hill sections, once again underlining the growing strength of the breed across Wales.

Judging responsibilities for both sections rested with Mr Lewis Runciman of the Allanshaws flock, Galashiels, who was presented with a strong and varied entry.

Park Type

Taking the Champion Park award was a gimmer on her first outing from Williams’ Pengroes flock, sired by Hownam Grange Chosen One. She impressed throughout with her style and balance, later capping a remarkable debut by going all the way to the Supreme Champion of Champions title at the close of the show.

Williams also secured the Reserve Park Championship with the best male, a stock tup purchased at Lockerbie last year for £3,800 — Synton Elmo’s Fire.

Other notable results in the Park section included:

  • Best Group of Three: Eithinog flock, Ifan Hughes

  • Reserve Male Champion: Tup lamb from Awen Griffith’s Gorslwyd Cheviots, sired by Sebay Excel

  • Reserve Female Champion: Ewe lamb from DJ Roberts, Ty Corniog

Hill Type

Top honours in the Hill section also went to Williams’ Pengroes flock with another homebred gimmer, again on her first outing and this time sired by Philiphaugh Xcitable. Standing Reserve Female Champion was a Pengroes aged ewe, sired by Badanloch.

The Champion Male came from Tomos Ellis’ Hiraethog flock, an aged tup Achentoul D 23481, sired by Dorrey Kilted Warrior and purchased at Lockerbie for £3,000. This tup went on to take the Reserve Hill Championship, with the Hiraethog flock also securing the Best Group of Three.

Interbreed Success

The strength of the North Country Cheviots was underlined later in the day during the interbreed competitions. The Park pair from Williams’ Pengroes flock claimed the Reserve Interbreed Pairs Award, before the Park gimmer added the ultimate accolade of the day — the Champion of Champions title — a fitting conclusion to a hugely successful show for the breed and its exhibitors.
