North Country Cheviot Sheep Society
The sun shone brightly as the very best of North Country Cheviot breeding was brought forward for judging at our National Show, held within Peebles Show on Saturday, 16th August 2025. Large crowds gathered to enjoy a superb display of stock in both the Park and Hill type rings, providing the judges with plenty to deliberate over.
Presiding over proceedings in the Park section was Mr Stephen Dodsworth of the South Lund flock, based near Alston in Cumbria, who had travelled across the Border to be met with an exceptional display of sheep. The depth of quality in every class was evident, with strong competition across the board making for a demanding but rewarding task.
In the Hill section, judging responsibilities were entrusted to Mr Robert MacDonald of Castle Grant, who was equally presented with an outstanding line-up. From the youngest lambs through to the mature ewes, the standard on show was a true credit to breeders and underlined the strength of the breed across Scotland.
The atmosphere around the rings was one of anticipation and pride, with breeders and spectators alike recognising the significance of a National Show staged within the wider Peebles event. Both rings attracted keen interest throughout the day, as exhibitors showcased sheep that reflected years of careful selection and commitment to breed improvement.
When the time came to tap out the eventual champions, the decisions were hard-fought and warmly received, with applause ringing out in recognition of the quality forward.
Park Type
Champion Park: A one-crop ewe, Hownam Grange Peony, sired by Knockcocher Bodyguard, from the Thomson family. This stylish and powerful ewe went on to secure the Interbreed Champion title before being crowned Champion of Champions at the Peebles Show — a fantastic achievement for the family, who all lend a hand on show day. Peony’s record speaks for itself, having previously stood Champion of Champions at Border Union Show and Interbreed Champion at Yetholm during the 2024 season.
Reserve Champion Park: Taking this award was the second-placed ewe, a two-crop from Steven Turnbull’s Jethart flock, Jedburgh. A homebred daughter of Allanshaws Almighty, she has already enjoyed a successful season, having stood Reserve Female Champion at the Royal Highland Show earlier this year.
Champion Hill: Taking the top spot was a three-crop ewe from well-known local breeders WN Douglas, Whitehope, expertly shown by their shepherd, Matt Carryer. This impressive daughter of Badanloch Va Va Voom caught the judge’s eye the moment she entered the ring, combining power with breed character to secure the red ticket and overall Hill honours.
Reserve Champion Hill: Standing Reserve was a homebred shearling tup from Gillesbie Farms, Gillesbie. Sired by Gillesbie Dilema, who sold at Lockerbie in 2024 for £12,000, this promising ram carried great presence and style, marking him out as a future stock-getter of note.
