North Country Cheviot Sheep Society
A perfect show day greeted exhibitors at Westmorland Show on Wednesday 9th September for the North Country Cheviot Society’s English National Show, with exhibitors travelling from as far afield as Derbyshire and Yorkshire to join the classes.
It proved to be a fantastic showcase of the North Country Cheviot breed, with an excellent standard of sheep forward for judges Miss Katy Davies, who travelled from North Wales to judge the Park section, and Mr Alan Hutcheon from Northumberland, who took charge of the Hill section.
Adding to the day’s overwhelming success, both the Park and Hill Champions went forward into the show’s interbreed judging, with the Park Champion taking top honours as Upland Interbreed Champion, while the Hill Champion secured the Reserve Upland Interbreed title – a fantastic achievement and testament to the quality of sheep exhibited.
In the Park section, Katy Davies found the champion she was looking for in a homebred gimmer from James Bruce’s Boxhill flock. Having travelled from Scarborough to attend the show, the journey was certainly made worthwhile.
The impressive gimmer is sired by Upper Cornquoy Exquisite, purchased from the Caithness sale in 2024 for £8,000, and is out of a homebred ewe by South Lund Canttouchthis. Katy commented that she had stood out from the moment she entered the ring, ultimately going on to claim the Park Championship before taking the prestigious Upland Interbreed Championship.
In the Hill section, Alan Hutcheon was delighted with the standard of sheep brought forward for his judging. His champion was a powerful two-shear ewe sired by Badanloch Xtra Special and out of an Attonburn ewe, exhibited by the local flock of Sam Campbell, Cumberland.
The ewe went on to secure the Reserve Upland Interbreed title, giving the North Country Cheviot breed a remarkable one-two in the interbreed competition.
A hugely successful day for the Society, with quality North Country Cheviots taking centre stage and demonstrating once again the strength and versatility of the breed.
